Actor Jim Murray has become a familiar face in the fight to protect Britain’s rivers — even standing waist-deep in polluted waters wearing a three-piece suit to call out water companies over the state of our waterways. Away from the headlines and campaigns, he’s happiest with a fishing rod quietly casting along the riverbank in the hope of tempting a salmon to rise.

We’ve persuaded him to swap the riverbank for The Yard, where he’ll be joining Annabel Ross for an engaging and thought-provoking conversation about the future of our rivers, the alarming decline of salmon, and what can be done to protect these precious landscapes for generations to come.

James Murray MBE is an English actor, artist, and river conservationist. He is well known for his work campaigning for British rivers and is a wild salmon advocate. He currently holds the position of Deputy Chair for River Action, and founded Activist Anglers in 2023.

His latest television roles include Chief Superintendent John Houseman in McDonald & Dodds, Prince Andrew in The Crown and Colonel Neil “Chick” Harding in Masters of the Air 

Annabel Rossis a podcast presenter for BBC Countryfile’s The Plodcast. She also created the audio series, Messages from the Wild, a collection of short interviews with wild animals. With her background in BBC World Service Radio and her experience of using engaging audio for education, including producing radio soap operas and magazine programmes over several years in East Africa, Annabel creates conversations to engage both her audience and her interviewees.

Graham Bell represented Great Britain at five Winter Olympic Games over fourteen years from Sarajevo in 1984 to Nagano in 1998. He was an eight-time British Ski Champion, recorded top ten finishes on the Alpine Ski World Cup Circuit and is one of the finest downhill skiers Britain has ever produced.

Alexandra Tolstoy is an explorer, author, broadcaster and entrepreneur whose life has been shaped by travel to some of the most remote parts of the world.

At 25, she set out on an extraordinary nine-month expedition along the ancient Silk Road, travelling 5,000 miles by horse and camel from Turkmenistan to China. The journey became her first book, The Last Secrets of the Silk Road, and was followed by expeditions on horseback through Mongolia, Siberia and Central Asia, including a remarkable ride from Turkmenistan to Moscow.

Her passion for travelling on horseback and for traditional cultures led to the BBC television series ‘Horse People with Alexandra Tolstoy’, in which she travelled the world exploring communities whose lives still revolve around horses.

Alexandra has spent more than 25 years travelling in Kyrgyzstan and is an official Ambassador for the country. She now runs Alexandra Tolstoy Travel, taking small groups on riding expeditions through the remote Tien Shan mountains. Most recently, she made Beyond the Silk Road, a documentary filmed in Kyrgyzstan with actors Dominic West and Clarke Peters.
